Da bears
Had an exciting night tonight. Well, morning, really. To explain:
About 5 am one of our shuttle truckers on the yard called in and said that we should be aware that there was a small bear in the horseshoe. (The horseshoe is a fenced-in lane that goes around the main building and the outside storage area). I called him back, thinking he was joking around, and asked him if it had a white stripe down it's back, thinking maybe he just saw a large skunk, because they frequently get under the fence and on the yard. He said no, it really was a bear. So I went over to the camera control and lo and behold, there was a bear running down the horseshoe. And man, he was fast.
SAFETY TIP: Don't ever run from a bear. They are really fast when they want to be and WILL chase you, like a dog chases a cat that runs away from it. Granted, I wouldn't know what else to do if I was confronted by a bear, but it would probably involve melting down into a quivering pile of jelly, and hoping it wasn't hungry.
I have no idea how it got on the yard. The yard is completely fenced in and has a sensor on it that alerts us to where the fence is being messed with. But when the shuttle driver came back to the guardhouse, the bear had run around behind a row of trailers and was wandering around behind the guard rail. So we called the police and the responded pretty quickly, like within 5 minutes. Animal control came too, along with a couple sheriffs cars and I believe county cops. 7 vehicles in all.
At one point the bear crawled up inside one of the trailers, and it eluded capture and dug it's way out under the fence and out into the drainage ditch and hopefully, the woods beyond. I saw it run down the embankment on the camera, but lost sight of it after because of the distance and poor lighting. Eventually, the cops and animal control left, and maintenance was notified about the hole in the fence.
All in all, it was the most exciting thing that's happened there since I started working there. Hopefully it never happens again.
