UFOs, Aliens, and God
I was listening to Coast to Coast AM with George Noory last night at work, as I usually do every night. George was talking to a guest about the possibility of Earth being visited by aliens. It made me think about something George talks about often, about what the possibility of aliens might mean to people's belief in God. It is something along the lines of if God created the planet and us, where did the aliens come from?
I know there are many answers to that question, but that's not where my mind headed at the time. I started examining my own beliefs. A common thought among people that follow alien and UFO sightings is that, out of all the UFO and alien sightings reported, it would only take one case to provide proof of their existence beyond doubt. I personally believe that there IS, more than likely, extraterrestrial life visiting our planet.
Then I looked at my own beliefs about God. I consider myself agnostic, meaning that I don't know if there is a god or not. I compared it to my belief in aliens, and found it wanting. Turns out, yet again, I prove myself to be a hypocrite.
Here's what I mean: Take ALL the evidence for the existence of aliens, and there's a pretty darn good case, in my eyes. But then I take all the evidence of possibility of a god... and see that it shows pretty much the same thing for God. I realized that my belief system was skewed, prejudiced even, against God's existence.
There is one possibility though, that makes my belief in aliens stronger, and a lot of people will probably think I'm crazy because of it. And that is...
What if all the people in the bible mistook aliens for a form of God? Lights in the sky, voices coming from burning bushes, a man rising from the dead, visions of the Apocalypse... all of these things COULD be attributed to alien contact and/or abduction. I'm not saying I BELIEVE it is, just saying... its one possibility.
